National Minimum Wage 2023

The new National Minimum Wage 2023 (NMW) is the minimum amount of pay that employers in the UK must pay their workers. The rates are set by the government and are reviewed annually. All pay dates that fall after 1 April 2023 must use at least the new National Minimum Wage to pay employees. This is a legal obligation, at PGA Payroll we ensure that all of our clients remain compliant with this legislation, if we notice that the National Minimum Wage is not being paid to an employee we will alert our clients immediately and suggest a course of action to resolve the situation.

The NMW is paid to workers aged 16 and over. There are different rates for different age groups and apprentices.

The NMW rates for 2023 are:

  • Age 23 or over (National Living Wage): £10.42 per hour
  • Age 21 to 22: £10.18 per hour
  • Age 18 to 20: £7.49 per hour
  • Under 18: £5.28 per hour

Apprentices are entitled to the same rates as workers in their age group, but they can be paid a lower rate for the first year of their apprenticeship.

Employers who pay their workers less than the NMW can be fined.
